Blockchain Safety and the IoT

Safety Through Authentication

Countless use cases for Blockchain have been identified and more are created each day. In fact, some experts are likening this boom in creativity to the early days of the internet. Time will tell.

As our technology landscape evolves, opportunities to improve upon existing systems crop up. Blockchain is an emerging technology that falls into this category. It offers a decentralized approach to system security which encourages engineers to challenge their predisposed opinions of safe and secure architectures. For the most part, heavy emphasis has been and continues to be placed upon the positive impacts Blockchain will have on the world of finance but there are very important benefits to be realized in other areas too.

One one such example is system safety. This happens to be a residual benefit attained from the increased level of security that Blockchain offers via its four core components. Encryption, Proof of Work, Decentralization, and Consensus working together make for more secure systems all the while reducing the potential for security related safety impacts. One could consider this to be “safety through security” and it is particularly relevant for systems participating in the IoT.

The most notable feature offered through Blockchain is authentication. Reliable authentication is a common obstacle for complex systems participating in the IoT. Whether you’re dealing with centralized networks, supply chains, or even combat systems the ability to authenticate can be the difference between success and failure or life and death.

Industries projected to benefit from improved authentication include (but are not limited to):

· Fraud

· Cyber

· Aerospace & Defense

· Automotive

· Public Health

· Food Health

· Aviation

As devices of the world steadily continue to connect with each other Blockchain based architectural solutions will become more prevalent. The measure of safety will weigh heavily upon Blockchain developers and their commitment to “safety by design” methodologies. With that said, the question stands — can Blockchain save us?
