Five Hours Marathon At The New Istanbul Airport

The clock was ticking fast and so was my heartbeat as the plane started to descend for the new Istanbul airport.

The 22 hours of transit in the Turkish capital with all expenses paid 5-star hotel sounded too good to be true. I was going to meet Shahid whom I had not met in the last 8 years. Both of us had gone through some pretty rough times and there was a lot of catching up to do.

I wanted to race against time.

As I stepped out of the airplane and into the terminal, I was stunned by the modern architecture, gigantic size, and state-of-the-art facilities. Initially, I got busy taking pictures and making videos. But soon enough, I was in for a mighty surprise.

I started to walk towards the transfer desk with boasting energy and unparalleled enthusiasm, which I had not experienced for a long time.

I kept on following the never-ending transfer desk signs. So, I decided to use my first lifeline. I approached a guy in the airport uniform and said “I am looking for the information desk as I have a long layover before my next flight”. He sent me one level up. But there was nothing except top-notch duty-free shops, high-end restaurants, and the hustle/bustle one could expect from a busy airport of a metropolis.

I kept on marching from one end to the other carrying my heavy backpack. To my surprise, I could not find even one help desk on the entire floor. This was really astonishing for me. At last, I came across an educated airport staff member who not only understood my problem but also guided me on the next steps to follow through.

I went through the lengths and breadths of the airport several times. There, I recalled the lines of the famous 70s Eagles group song Hotel California where it says “This could be heaven or this could be hell”. I wasn’t thinking of heaven.

I continued my journey within the maze. After hours of beating about the bush, I finally landed at the right place. The officer studied my travel documents. I stood there in silence and…
