Sometimes you don’t even know you’re out of whack.

We travel through life doing, doing, doing and not paying attention to what we’re doing or why. Before we know it we’re just chugging along and calling it living.

The Sims

As a GenX-er I don’t have another fifty years to fritter away, aimlessly. I want to know what I’m doing, and why, at every step.

Realization that you’re aging, just like age itself, kind of creeps up on you sideways and pops up in unexpected ways. One way that caught me by surprise was through The Sims game.

Most notably, each character has a little reserve that reflects the condition of each of these components. So when a Sim hasn’t slept in twenty hours, their sleep reserve dips dangerously low; the Sim will proceed to yawn, then move into exhaustion hallucinations and then may just drop to the floor and fall asleep right then and there. Forget to feed your Sim and it will drop dead from starvation, and so on.

I was oddly fascinated with this game and hugely impatient with my Sim’s inability to get things done faster, make more money, get a bigger house, a better job, a better everything. Soon, I found myself pushing my Sim beyond its ability. I was rolling my eyes when it couldn’t get a promotion or make more money. Angry for it’s lack of networking skills. Mad that it gained weight. Pissed that its house was unattractively decorated and defying all laws of feng shui. Annoyed that it let some other Sim move in on its man. One day it dawned on me:
