Coronavirus Triggers Flashbacks of the 2018 Nipah Terror

But I am drawing hope from my state’s successful battle against the deadly virus.

The virus seemed to have spread from animals to humans at a market that sold exotic animal meats. As cases mushroomed even in places far away from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, fear of a menacing epidemic was rearing its ugly head.

My mind raced back to those dark days when irrational panic gripped the state, fueled by the terrible symptoms of the virus, a general lack of awareness, and fake news on social media.

I had relatives living in Kozhikode and nearby districts at that time. Even though I was outside the state then, I had felt the icy hands of trepidation slicing through my insides each time I called home, terrified of hearing that somebody I knew and loved had fallen prey to the deadly infection.

As news tickers lit up the TV screen with disturbing updates on Coronavirus, I relived Kerala’s Nipah episode that began in utter despair and ended as a heroic tale of courage, resilience, and disciplined execution of a containment strategy.
