How Experienced Developers Resist the Need to Start Work Right Away

Resist the need for the making, and understand your biases

What should you do if you don’t have work freedom? What if you can’t decide on the approach to take?

Some would say to build the thing. Deal with the consequences later. Even so, there could’ve been an easier path. You could have your solution out-of-the-box, and avoid the hassle.

Have a PoC first. Also, it’s important to be on the same page, so ADR should help with this matter. After doing a spike, and having a decision record, you’re good to go on the change.

If your decision is bad, it’s better to stop early. Building the thing, and then dealing later could be expensive. What’s more effective: talk beforehand or change the code afterward?

PoC is a great tool, as you’re moving forward. Also, it’s not that big of a deal, you can always scrape the thing. But on the management side, it’s progress, and you have something to show for it.

Focus on interests. What’s the interest of this solution? If you reconcile the solution, you won’t get far. If you reconcile interests you’ll get to a mutual agreement.

And interests shape the problem. So focusing on interests, and problems will lead to a solution.

A new solution isn’t yours, but as long as it solves the problem, does it matter? Do you know why your solution is good? Don’t you have biases towards your solution?

How do you confirm your idea? Don’t you have some sort of bias towards the idea?

If you did a lot of X, you’ll know to do it again. Faster and more efficient. While in reality that’s not the case.

In programming that would mean that already done tasks should be easier to complete. Or that creating abstraction will lead to easier…
