Enterprise API Management in Azure

Data is the new oil. It’s everywhere, in every form and it’s growing every single day. New sources, enabled by a vast array of devices, connected products and IoT.

Enterprise organisations run on information and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are the most common and optimised way of connecting apps, data and services. APIs are driving digital transformation in organisations.

The major drawback is that tracking utilisation or analysing performance is difficult. It calls for an API management platform to help manage the various data sources. Azure API Management is a ready-made solution for this.

The list of benefits offered by the platform is long but some key ones addressed form the major pillars of an enterprise architecture, security, performance, scale and management all catered for.

It provides you with a portal with an auto-generated API catalogue, documentation, and code samples. From here you can manage access and monitor usage and there is also an interactive console for API testing.

2. Connect to back-end services anywhere

You can connect to services built and running on any technology stack, hosted anywhere and ready to scale to handle any traffic growth or spike

3. Execute rules on APIs.

API policies can be defined on incoming requests and outgoing responses globally, per API, or per API operation. There are policies like authentication methods, throttling, caching, and transformations.

API requests can be authenticated using a subscription key, JSON Web Token (JWT), client certificate, or custom headers. Traffic may be filtered down only to trusted IP addresses

4. Simplify change management.

You can manage APIs throughout their full life cycle from design phase, to introducing new versions or revisions.

5. Insight.

Get a better understanding of how your APIs are performing and being used. Simplify and optimise requests and responses using transformation policies. Get near-real-time analytics reports to identify trends that might affect your business, plus log request and response data for online and offline analysis.

You may also log API calls in Azure Application Insights to create charts, monitor live traffic, and simplify debugging.

6. Publish APIs to consumers.

Azure API Management comes with a developer portal which is an automatically generated, fully customisable website where consumers can discover APIs, learn how to use them, try them out interactively and sign up to acquire API keys.

Azure API Management is a reliable, secure and scalable way to publish, consume and manage API’s running on Microsoft Azure platform. Azure API Management provides all essential tools required for an end-to-end management of API’s. It ensures optimal performance of the API’s, tracks and enforces usage, authentication, and more.

Quickly create consistent and modern API gateways for existing back-end services hosted anywhere. Better understand and optimise your APIs.
