Keep Rollin! How to Gain and Sustain a Productive Day

When we think of motivation, The Myth of Sisyphus probably does not come to mind. For those of you not familiar with the story, Sisyphus is a conniving, cunning Greek mythological figure who did nothing other than defy the gods. What’s important is that we will focus on is the punishment that he received. As creative and cruel as it was, it’s important that we see that we can channel our lives to be the same way Sisyphus was banished to rolling that stone. I know this explanation seems like a reach but bear with me. It will make sense as I explain it. Today I’ll explain about how “getting the ball rolling” early is important and how it will set the tone for the rest of the day, finding the correct setting in order to be the most effective version of yourself for that day and finally we will look into techniques and ways to hold yourself accountable in order to keep that motivation.

Every morning Sisyphus begins his day and immediately works on rolling his stone and so should you. One of the keys to building momentum for a successful day is to start early. Wake up early and begin on your routine. Find whatever it takes to make you comfortable and prepared for whatever you have to do for that day. This by far is the most important part of the day because it sets the tone for the rest of that day. Imagine Sisyphus not being able to get his stone rolling off the bat? It would be a failure from the start. So basically “get the ball rolling” from your planned moment to wake up. I for example wake up around 6:30. I shower, I plan for the day. I do some personal projects and I get to work. However, if I miss any of these steps, having a successful day becomes that much harder. So for your personal exercise, find what will make your day an effective one when you wake up and make it part of who you are everyday.

The second most important thing in keeping momentum and having a successful day is to make sure that you are in the proper environment that is conducive to productivity. I cannot stress enough how important this is. Once you get the ball rolling it’s really important that the environment you set for yourself is one that promotes productivity. That includes everything from the scent of your workspace to exact clothes you are wearing. When I sit at the desk, I make sure that my coffee is at hand as well as my water. If I need to go to the restroom, I’ll go before I sit. I’ll wear comfortable clothing and make sure that my space is clean. If i’m in the mood for music. I’ll choose something that will work inducing. I literally keep my phone across the room and I close all block distracting websites from my laptop. And if the room doesn’t work for me I’ll find a new room.

Once you’ve got your environment set for success, you need specific techniques to be on your productive way. First one is to either break down your goals for the day into smaller tasks or to set a timer. What I usually do is that I set a timer for about an hour and I set a small goal to achieve within that hour. Once that hour is done I take a five to ten minute break and start again. Rinse cycle, repeat. It really important that when you do this, you keep in track of the progress that you are making you don’t want to work just to pass the time. Be clear about the goals you want to set. You know how in school when you’re taking a timed test you try your best to finish that test? Treat your hourly goals in the same way.

There you have it! If you want to be successful in whatever you are trying to accomplish. Be like Sisyphus, get that stone rolling, get it to the top, and let it roll back down. Wake up, do it again. That’s the key. It’s important that you make this a part of yourself and stick with it daily so that you find real momentum. Wake up and set the tone, make sure your environment is conducive to productivity and finally take it one step at a time. Soon you’ll roll away all of the stones in your path to success.
