The duality of jellyfish

M y first step to create a mood board based on the jellyfish was to draw a mind map. Because words and pictures walk together — at least in my head.

Starting from the word itself, I thought of its associations, evocations and connotations: sea creature, tentacles, go with the flow, produces its own light… I then moved onto a different, more abstract level: jellyfishes are peaceful, gracious, they look like ballerinas, hot-air balloons, floating flowers, they symbolise happiness, flexibility, confidence… and soon I had a third level coming to my mind: jellyfishes can be deadly and poisonous, in fact the French word for it is “méduse”, which brings us to the mythological monster, Medusa the Gorgon, with snakes as hair and a deadly gaze that could turn you into stone.

I found interesting to get such different insights from just one word, one innocent animal, and decided to highlight this in my mood board.

This is why one can see peaceful, graceful, feminine evocations of the jellyfish, its place within the natural world, its attributes and its beauty, but also the other side of the story : death, difference, hatred, fear of something unknown.
