My Take Home of My Team

Conventional wisdom would forbid forming one’s judgment of the character of another basing on the experience of a fleeting moment of interaction and communion — mostly rightly so as Ms. Christina, co-founder of Andela did mention in her Andela story in an impromptu onboarding session on Monday: “you can not decide to hire a prospective employee basing on a few hours of interaction in an interview” in response to a question about the lengthy process to joining the Andela fellowship.

Christina was right, but there is always an exception to the rule; mastery of the art of picking up the the silent signals of pure character to form a skeleton of attitude free opinions and fitting the secondary pieces as they show up, just like an artist who doesn’t need hours in front of their subject, but rather a split second get a sketch of the most conspicuous features and develop the rest of the piece in ample time.

An excess of true character will always ooze out of the holder, all we need is develop the keenness to pick it up! I could not be more than averagely keen but here is what I managed or think so, to pick out of my team in this while;

Okiror Frank is knowledgeable and out there to help. He also is not shy to seek help. I have always seen him engage on slack, had a great deal of chat with him and Araali during the onboarding and continue to engage him and get engaged, mostly each time getting a win-win for both parties. The most recent case in example is when I sought a way out of a challenge earlier in the day and he came up with yet another beneficial hint. Then we all got the initial solution from the LFA plus a bonus option to ponder.

Additionally, I take it that outside of the formal setting he is interesting to be with as he has a non-imposing and non-dominating personality.

Franc’s way of relating and engaging is modeled around need meeting supply. So the introvert or self-conceited probably will reap little of his vast worth. The silver-lining; my team has none of these characters, but if there were, he(Franc) then would be a good compulsion to gradual change

Nabende Ali is great to be around. He has a lot of experience that he is open-handed with. I have known him for a while now from the level-up program.

Ali is a realist who will know what is achievable and pursue just that! Through the days of level-up, I have ever implored him to either complete or postpone some tasks to a later time and ended up surprised by his determination to achieve what he deems achievable or stay action wherever he judges effort will be fruitless. He definitely is a must have in a team and will be of tremendous help in planning, scheduling, and allocation of tasks and giving a sense of direction in achieving what has been agreed as achievable.

I have also seen how Articulate Ali is in face-to-face meetings. That's a great potential for brainstorming and including the introvert. Besides, many times a face-to-face is a lot better than other channels of communicating

The downside though maybe the extra effort in convincing him to see otherwise if he has already determined else. The silver lining — the discipline it then will bring the team in thorough evaluation of undertakings in planning

Abdallah must be having some personal challenges or so, but I think he would have been both refreshing and a great steering force for the group — he had quite an inspiring Andela story. Brief though our interaction was, he talked more than any member of the team yet he came last. Within that while, he had already given a lot more than is sufficient to form the basis of an opinion about his character. He would have been the one to lighten up the team’s spirit in tough times!

Brian, my LFA, is understanding and tailors his attention to address individual needs.

He also gives in a lot of attention to detail in reviewing our outputs and I reckon goes through every single bit judging from the quality of feedback he gives.

Having Brian as my LFA has privileged me to invaluable resources and ideas. He not only gives feedback on what to do but also how to go about and relevant material and ideas.

If I had to summarize his worth in a paragraph as a precondition, perhaps I would miss heaven then! Knowledgable, Resourceful(these two are different!), considerate, dedicated, thorough, …

Overall, I have been blessed with a good team where collectively, we fill each other’s gaps and therefore cannot be wanting, though Abdallah would have made us even stronger. Our big extra… a more than sufficient mentor in an LFA.

I look forward to having a great experience through this week with my awesome team
