You Get What You Give

The transition period between high school and college was an eye-opening time for me. You start to realize many different things about your life and what is going on around you. You realize what and who are your first priorities, where you’re starting to go in life, and what your path looks like. People always told me how different college is from high school but after this first semester, I honestly didn’t really see a huge difference. I think that being a commuter student is definitely why I feel this way. Having the same routine every single day just makes it feel like four more years of high school. Go to class for an hour or two, grab a coffee, then go to another class just to head home right after, four days, every week.

I haven’t had a chance to put myself out there in college. Everything happens after I head home, and I feel like if I do stick around after class, I am going to be losing time to do homework. The night life and weekend life of college, especially in Detroit, is something that I am missing out on. But on the bright side, focusing on school and work has really helped me get ahead with some money saving strategies and I guess I’m not really missing out on that much downtown. When I’m not at school, I’m at work but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. At home, I feel like I am free of distractions during the week so I get homework done much quicker than I would if I lived on campus. Of course I do still get stressed out by many things from school, but living at home with my family just makes me feel like I can focus more on my grades than focusing too much on paying dorm fees or meal plans.

Learning about money saving strategies while also staying motivated for school was something I really did take away from FYS with Hawkes. Thinking up ways to save money is something big for me and since I am still working, I do have a good source of income. Throughout the week, I just spend my money on coffees and dinners when I don’t bring food from home. I really just have to worry about saving money for my car, such as insurance, gas money, and a parking pass.

This first semester seemed to fly by and now that you think about it, the first year of college is already halfway over. This is the time where I need to have a definite plan for my major and make sure to pass all of my finals while also living a healthy life. Even though I’m not sure what I want my career to be in life, I have a good job right now at a museum so that’s a good start. Working with my advisor and the environmental science department can open up my thoughts as to where I want to go in life and what I can do to make my mark on the world or even just a local area.
