Hump Day

Hump day. You shot out of the gate on Monday strong and carried it on in to Tuesday, but come noon on Wednesday you’re struggling a bit. Did I mistakenly fill up on de-caf at lunch?! Just like your…

Sometimes Disappointment Just Means More Research

West Texas at 103 is at its highest temp for the day, expected to be in the mid-90’s for the weekend.

I don’t mind the heat terribly—not that I don’t go to air conditioning when I get the chance, but the truth is that I like heat much better than I do cold. Not everyone here feels that way. And I’ll admit that heat does tend to bring about more of a kind of lethargy.

I’ve largely ignored the heat because I’m inside, out of the sun, and if not completely comfortable, at least it’s tolerable. I get up occasionally from my desk and walk around a little bit, serving the multiple purposes of stretching and getting my circulation going.

But today has been somewhat of a downer for other reasons. Got a report done, check…did some research on Galacticon, a science fiction convention in Roswell that I could attend, check…looking for a place in Riudoso to celebrate an anniversary, not check, but I have some time yet….and I got after several weeks an acceptance letter to the local University’s Master of English program.

Since I’ve been wanting to take at least a few courses to maybe be able to teach at the college level, and possibly continue a program to pursue higher ed, you’d think an acceptance letter would be a good thing, right? Well the catch for my acceptance was 21 hours of undergraduate course work.

Holy moly!

That’s a lot of undergraduate work after two Master’s—one already in Counseling and one in Special Education. I didn’t necessarily think I was an instant shoe-in for the program, but that’s pretty much saying,

“Pretend you’ve got your basics out of the way, then start from there.”

I can understand some remediation, but really? I know how to research, I know how to read…why the extra work? I’m not against learning it, per say, but couldn’t I just as easily take some specific classes if I need something in particular to catch up to Master’s Level English literature and literary criticism?

So….I’m going to get a second opinion on that. There’s got to be a better way to blow a lot of money than take courses just because there in someone’s rule book. I can jump through a few hoops, but really?

I’ve already some research about programs, so I’m hopeful, but I could be mistaken. Maybe all universities require this kind of thing. Is it possible all have hoops like this? I hope, if I run into hoops at other places, there are fewer.
