Exploiting Creativity in 2022

There is no greater evil against people than this modern drive — how many clicks, sales, and likes driving the reason behind why we create. The why is about creating for quantification, and growth for growth's sake. Creating because the goal is to win big in the marketplace, steal market share, get the most likes and build the biggest community, sell the most stories no matter whose agenda drives the narrative (the point is that the agenda is not yours).

Key to what makes us human is our power to create. It is an inherent intelligence to have thoughts and to use those thoughts to shape reality around us. Our right to express and create comes from within, and because it comes from ourselves and is not granted to us by something or someone else, we are incredibly powerful. Today, that power is stolen away. We are so out of touch with it in most cases, we freely give the power away or decide it is a useless and inefficient way to be productive.

Our creativity is exploited when the result of our work must always be measurable and quantifiable. If these are our parameters, we are not fully tapping into what we are truly capable of. As a result, this creates emptiness in me, emptiness in you, and all who are touched by exploited creativity; emptiness - even as our lives fill more heavily with stuff.

When creativity is exercised to see specific measurable and quantifiable results, people lose an inherent universal intelligence that connects them to everything that’s bigger than themselves. This is why: Creation should be driven by the result one wants to see in the world, not by the number of people it reaches, amount of sales it generates, or likes it receives. This is creation in its most natural form.

We are the creators, we are the gods. If I create against my intended desired result, I am more likely to be using my creativity for the good of all conscious beings, and doing justice to myself in the process. I say or think before I create, for example, that I want to bring people joy by bringing them together with the people they love, and this thought now shapes how I create my company’s game products. I care about the natural world, so when I collaborate with manufacturing, my desire to do little to no harm to nature drives my decisions. I become unyielding in what I will and will not sacrifice in the process to stay true to my core creation desire. When I design a slide deck at work, a task that can be tedious and unrewarding, I decide I will create a deck that informs but delights, to bring a pop of beauty and information together to delight those who see it. I also set my mind on constantly improving my skills so that I am able to create something strong and beautiful.

What we need is to formulate the reason behind why we create, and to never give up on finding the answer, even if it takes a long time and many failed attempts.

In the world of corporate businesses, we have already lost our creative souls. People create against what they are told to create, or they generate value through their creativity, but the reasons behind their efforts are to stay always measurable and quantifiable. From what I have witnessed during my time in the working world, this way of creating will probably bring them success in the workplace and maybe in the marketplace.

But - the creator who is able to define their reason for creating beyond growth for growth’s sake, and create value crafted around the reasons they have deigned important, they will find success in the greater and longer term. They will be practicing how to listen to their creative self, and practicing how to create actual value in a world that needs it desperately. Our inherent creative selves know exactly what is missing, what is needed, and what you — yes you, can uniquely manifest in the world.
